Crossbow Hunting in the Rain
Hunting in the rain using a crossbow can be challenging. Hunters will agree that a little drizzle and mist can be advantageous to some degree, but a strong downpour is especially difficult, particularly when it comes to tracking game. However, there might be some instances where the weather becomes unpredictable and a hunter gets caught in the middle of a heavy rain. In these cases, it’s better to come prepared with the right gear and clothing.
As a precaution, when there’s a possible chance of rain, wax or oil the crossbow while preparing for the hunt. Bringing a plastic bag where it could fit once the downpour begins is also a good idea. However, keep in mind to take it out as soon as possible, otherwise, condensation in the bag can ruin it. If rust does get into the crossbow, wiping the affected area with a gun cleaner can do the trick. A water-displacing spray can also be used for removing moisture in the hard to reach nooks and crannies.
Besides the crossbow, preparing the right gear and clothing is also important. Quality rain hunting gear maybe expensive but for the hunting aficionados, this can be a good investment since it can be more durable for more outdoor activities. Bringing a wide-brimmed hat and wearing warm and comfortable camouflage clothing are also things to consider. Wet ground can be slippery, so finding the right kind of boots can prevent any bad fall or accidents that can ruin the hunting experience.
Tracking is the most challenging part of hunting under the rain. The rain covers any noise, blood trails and any other tracks so hunting becomes really tricky. Deer can still be around even during a light rain but once the rain gets heavier, they start to disperse and hide. Meanwhile, hogs are better to hunt in the rain since these animals enjoy the mud. Shooting in close distances is also recommended because the rain makes it difficult to see the arrow’s trajectory, plus shooting from a lesser distance gives better arrow penetration of the prey.
Hunting under the rain, especially during a heavy downpour, presents a more dangerous hunting situation so it’s best to bring along a hunting companion. It’s always better to have someone along to help in case something happens. Whether it’s a bright sunny weather or an overcast day, safety should be a foremost concern for a crossbow hunter.
Hunting under the Snow
Two hunters are walking down the forest with a pair of crossbows. They are there for one reason and that is waiting for a big game animal to appear. They wait patiently for their prey and
it seemed like an eternity. Then, there is a rustling of leaves in the stillness of the forest and movement. A pair of antlers appears and the two become excited. The weather is somewhat drizzly, but the wind has died down and the deer smelled the air.
One of the hunters took aim, and then fired an arrow towards the animal. The deer was taken aback after being hit, then it ran as fast it could. However, it stopped after a few meters weakened by blood loss. The two caught up with the animal and watched it breathe slowly. In a few minutes, the deer was about to become a trophy for these two.
It is quite fun to go deer-hunting on a fine sunny day, but hunting under inclement conditions is a different story. Incidentally, deer
are the favorite targets of most hunters because these animals pose a challenge to them because of their agility and speed. Another thing is that deer are not endangered animals and they are in fact very numerous and can be found in forests or woody areas. For this reason, a crossbow is a very good hunting weapon that can be used to kill many deer because of its precise accuracy and very feather-light arrows.
Hunting in the snow can be very difficult because of the wind, rain, and the snow itself. Hunters may have a hard time shooting arrows from their crossbows because they may become very erratic in their flight when it is raining. One hunter intimated that he once shot arrows that were very light, but landed beyond their targets because of heavy rain. Other obvious reasons that affect the efficiency of this weapon would be the wind and blustery conditions and these can render even the best crossbow arrows ineffective. Snowy weather will not help either because aside from its effects on the weapon, its user may have a hard time shooting arrows accurately because they make winter clothing denser.
Since a crossbow is made of metal, there is a great chance that rust will develop because of the moisture that came from the snow and rain. Additionally, if the strings in the weapon are not waxed, then the arrows may not fire very well.

Crossbow 101: Scopes
There are Four Variations of Crossbow Scopes:
- Optical Scopes- have a cross hatch that you see when you look through the scope
- Multi-reticle Scopes- with many fine lines through the cross hatch, which give you the ability to better estimate range and compensate for winds
- Single Red-Dot Scope- Powered and contains one single red-dot sight to help for aiming.
- Multi Red-Dot Scope- Powered and contains multiple red-dot sights to help for aiming.
Although these are varying mechanisms, these sights have a similar method for adjusting and use.
Instructions
1.Find the adjusting mechanisms on your scope. The windage adjustment, which rotates the scope left and right, is located on the side of the scope. The elevation adjustment, in which adjusts the scope up and down, is positioned on the top.
2.Begin at 10 yards from your target to check that the scope is properly mounted. If you miss from this close, odds are the scope isn’t installed correctly. If that is the case, make a few large adjustments with the windage and elevation mechanisms until you hit the target consistantly. You will hear a clicking sound as you turn each mechanism. Each click adjusts the impact range of your projectile by 1/40 inch at a range of 10 yards.
3.Move about to 20 yards from the target. Shoot three arrows in a group. You cannot permanently adjust your scope until you can hit three arrows in a tight group.
4.Select a base range for your top reticle or dot. When the target is in this line or dot, it is “dead on. ” In most scopes, each reticle or additional dot indicates 10 yards difference in impact distance. Your base distance can be anything you choose. Use the instruction manuals that came with your scope to assist you calculate how much distance will be changed in the impact distance by each “click” of the adjustment mechanisms. Usually, at 20 yards a single click adjusts the impact point by a quarter-inch. So if you’re shooting two inches to the left of the target, you’ll have to twist your windage adjustment eight times to compensate.
5.Continue shooting at the target and change the windage and elevation adjustments to get closer and closer to the target. When you are consistently hitting the target, your adjustments no longer need to be used. Now shoot at targets knowing what distance the reticles or dots indicate.
