3 Quick Tips for Bow Hunting During the Rut

Bow hunting during the rutWhile there are deer hunters of every caliber that are going to be hitting the field this season, every one of them has one thing in common. What they have in common is that they have all been lead to believe that the best time to hunt is during the rut. While the specifics are dependent on the particular area that you are hunting, the one thing that cannot be debated is that there will be an increase in daytime activity--especially with the typical pattern of mature bucks.

Choice of Hunting Weapon Doesn't Matter

Your weapon of choice does not matter. You could be shooting a takedown bow, compound bow, or a crossbow. The main part that matters is that you are doing your due diligence when scouting the area that you will be hunting. Below are a few things that you want to keep in mind when bow hunting for bucks.
  • Scent is your main concern. You want to set up your location somewhere that the animal will not be able to sense you. Deer have a stronger than usual olfactory receptors. So you better believe that they will be on alert during this time as they are looking for doe-estrous,0707
  • Look for pinch points. Pinch points are locations where the land forces the deer to go through a narrow area. Finding one of these will up your chances at seeing a deer. Be careful though, because other bow hunters may have already had the same idea.
  • If you have any doe estrous and a possible decoy, all you need to do is spray a little bit on the hind legs, and you should be good to go. Couple that with an inexpensive game hunting call, and you have a recipe for success. If you do not have a deer hunting decoy, just ignore this tip.
Hunting these animals is all about strategy and tactics. You need to lay the groundwork and put yourself in the right position to succeed. If you do not set yourself up to succeed, then the chances are slim to none that you will come home to put meat in your freezer.
