Archery Bow (2012)

by on Feb.16, 2012, under Articles

Archery can be a practice, an art and a skill in using both the bow and arrow. Coming from the Latin word ‘Arcus’, this has been in the lives of people way back in history for combat and hunting purposes but in much modern times; archery is now a recreational activity and a person who participates in archery is called a ‘bowman’ or an ‘archer’. A person who is fond of archery or is an expert in the sport is often called a “toxophile” – a student, or lover of archery.

Just like everything else in the lives of many people, there will always be modified or newer versions of technology, vehicles, clothing etc. Archers on the other hand, crave for much better, much stronger bows for better performance. For generations now, people have found ways to enhance both their equipment and skill in every sport known to man; they would most likely only want the best to be the best. Companies who make bows work hard to construct enhanced bows for archery, to captivate the attention of many archers from all over the world. One of these companies, known as Mathews Archery; has unveiled their new bows for archery for this year.

Matthews Heli-m new bow was known to be the bow that took 20 years of technology and Matthews innovation taken into it. It is known to be the lightest of all the archery bows ever created, weighing 3. 5 lbs with a 7″ height. This archery bow has the IBO speed, measuring to a surprising 332fps and Matthews vibration and sound dampening technology makes this one of the major contenders in the year 2012 lineup for archery bows.

Other bows are that of Bowtech, Insanity CPXL and CPX. One of the changes in these archery bows is that its overdrive binary cams are found at the end of the bows limb rather than being on top like the Destroyer and Invasion series. The Bowtech Insanity CPX archery bow has the speed of 355 FPS, the axle length of 32″, a brace height of 6″. Its draw length measures from a 25. 5″ to a 30′ and its peak draw weighs from 50 to 80 pounds while its weight is 4. 3 pounds in measurement.

The Bowtech Insanity CPXL has the speed of 340 FPS, a brace height 7″, an axle length of 35″, draw length of 27. 5″ to 32″. Its peak draw weights from 50 to 80 pounds and the bow itself weights 4. 4 pounds.

The weight, height and the speed of bows used in archery vary and due to the fact year after year, the competitively of man and women in this sport have risen to new heights so has the companies who create bows. They always want to create something new, something better and something that all archers would want to have. In competitions, only the best are chosen and this is why archery bows are created at its best year after year for the sake of the sport and for those who compete for the title of being the best.

Whats Your Choice Crossbow Or Archery Bow

by on Feb.10, 2012, under Articles

With the introduction of the numerous firearms, archery bows and their close cousin, the crossbows have taken a step down from being the highly popular weapons. However, this does not mean that they are obsolete these days. Actually, hunting with these bows is thought to be a great recreational activity for those who enjoy enjoyable pursuits.

For most people, a issue forms when it comes to choosing between the two bows. To better understand the workings and differences of these two weapons, a brief background is necessary. Archery bows are one of most primitive firearms, dating back as far as ten thousand years ago. It involves shooting an arrow in a projectile motion with the use of a bow. Oddly, this comes in a lot of distinct types that depends on the materials used in creating them. Examples of these include wood made longbow, composite bow and the recurve bow, which is the official bow used in the Olympic Games.

On the other hand, a crossbow is a mounted bow with a stock and a trigger that is equivalent to a rifle. In place of arrows, bolts or quarrels are shot in the same fashion. Just like the archery type, crossbows are medieval weapons that have evolved over the years. There are also many types of crossbows. The compound crossbow, recurve crossbow and the pistol crossbow are examples of modern types available.

With these in mind, differences between archery and crossbows can be identified and examined. The most obvious one is their weight difference. Archery bows are absolutely much lighter than crossbows, which makes it the less awkward weapon choice for beginner archers. The crossbows make up for this by providing the shooter a greater draw force than what an archery bow can give.

The amount of time needed to learn how to use these weapons is also very much unalike. Learning the how to shoot an arrow effectively from an archery bow takes more time in contrast to picking up the techniques in using the crossbow. Other than that, crossbows offer less draw length, and therefore less required energy than those for archery.

When it comes to the rate of fire or the shots that can be made in a specified time, archer bows prove to be the faster weapon of the two. Crossbow, however, is the more accurate weapon since there would be less tension in the arms and hands when preparing for a shot. Crosshairs can also be attached as an accessory for the crossbow.

In conclusion, picking one over the other will depend on the shooter’s capabilities and needs. Those who want to get serious in projectile-based weapons should opt for archer bows, but for those who just want to have a good hunt, crossbow is an excellent choice. Finally, these are great for faster shots, while crossbows allow more forceful ones.

Youth Archery Bows

by on Feb.07, 2012, under News Update

The art of archery is becoming more and more popular; many people of various ages have begun learning it. As they grow to love the art, they talk to their family and friends about it, and the number of people who wish to learn it grows even more. In the process, more kids become attracted to the idea or are put on training by their parents, hoping that having their kids train at an early age will make them very skilled in using and handling a youth archery bow.

There are bows which are specifically and carefully designed for different users. There are bows made in particular for women, and there are models designed especially for kids. The fact is, a person is likely to find an youth archery bow made for kids as young as three years old!

These bows differ in length, as well as in draw weight. This is why it is important to choose the correct kind of bow for each person. To find out the appropriate length and draw weight of bow for a person, he or she has to check certain aspects. The same thing applies to kids, so they need to be guided by their parents or a grown up who is knowledgeable in archery.

Before picking a bow for archery lessons, it has to be determined if a kid is left or right handed. If, for example, a kid is right handed, it signifies he or she will be drawing the bow string using his or her right hand. To identify the length of bow which a kid can use, he or she will be asked to stretch out his or her arms to the front with the palms together. Somebody then measures the length from the center of the kid’s chest towards the tips of his or her outstretched fingers – this measurement, plus about an inch, will be the kid’s arrow length. Based on this arrow length, the bow length can be determined. There are corresponding bow lengths for different arrow length ranges.

Last but not least, the draw weight also has to be identified. This needs a certain level of judgement depending on how far a kid can pull the string. Oftentimes, especially with kids learning archery for the first time, a lower poundage is selected for them. However, since they learn fast and quickly adapt to their movements and the sensation of pulling the string, they may increase the poundage bit by bit.

The Evolutionary of Crossbows and Bows!!!

by on Feb.01, 2012, under Articles

The Evolution

The crossbow of today that is being used for hunting and shooting targets had its beginnings during the fourth century B. C. Previously, it was used as a weapon and was prevalent during the East Asia warfare in the 4TH century. ‘Ballista’, a derivative word of the weapon, is an engine with torsion, looking like a crossbow. The popular hunting equipment of today exist in several varieties and are classified according to the system of acceleration, energy, size, as well as projectiles. The simplest of the systems of acceleration is the so-called straight prod and is probably the earliest version.

Some of the more common kinds of the shooting equipment are:

· The recurve bow

· Multiple bows

· The compound bow

· The pistol type

· The arbalest bow

The ‘recurve bow’ has tips, which curves from the archer. It has limbs that are long compared to the bows that are straight-limbed. This enables more acceleration power to the projectile, eliminating some of the shock to the hands. Peculiar to this bow is the sound it makes during a shot.

The system of multiple bows is special as it has a pulling sinew consisting of several bows. This kind is likened to the modern system of compound bow. It makes use of a number of diverse bows rather than a single bow composed of a tackle system. This allows for a more highly accelerated sinew with a multiplied pulling effect of the bow.

The compound bow is the modern generation bow. The limbs of this kind of bow are stiff, as compared to the ‘recurve bow’; this stiffness translates to more energy. Its pulley has a string directly attached to it with one or more of the cables attached to the other end of the limb.

The pistol type is the smallest kind of bow. Some are the long stocks with the bows directly mounted on over the stock. This kind of bow could be shot and used under the arm. This led to the advancement of the rifle-looking stocks allowing for better aim for the archer.

The arbalest bow is of the heavy type. With its heavyweight construction, a special kind of mechanism is required to pull the sinew, the windlasses.

History points in the direction of the cultures of ancient China and its neighbours as the first proponents and origins of this type of weapon. During said period the bows were merely regarded and used as traps and were generally made out of lumber.

New Crossbows For 2012

by on Jan.31, 2012, under Articles

Intending on taking up game hunting this year? The crossbow could be a good weapon to start with. It’s quiet, relatively cheap, and in the hands of a well-informed beginner, relatively safe. But buying such a crossbow isn’t as straightforward as choosing the most appealing color or suitable camouflage scheme. Considerations such as what sort of game will be hunted and the physical characteristics of the hunter will have to be taken into account.

The particular crossbow can be rated by how fast it can shoot its projectile (called a bolt), expressed in feet per second (fps). Generally, the higher this figure is, the larger the prey the crossbow can actually take down. However, the higher fps, the more difficult it is to cock back the string that actually propels the bolt. This is the crossbows draw weight. So the higher the draw weight, the bigger and stronger the hunted should be to be able to use the bow comfortably. Usually, a crossbow with 285 fps is enough for a deer, or black bear and would have a draw weight of about 150 lbs…., which is just appropriate for an averagely built person.

For 2012, top crossbow manufacturers have some great gear to offer budding and experienced hunting enthusiasts. Scorpyd has the new Ventilator, supposedly a scaled down version of the popular SLP. The model is available in 100, 125 and 150 lbs. draw weights, delivering up to 400 fps. Roughly 36 inches long and weighing about 8 lbs., the base kit of the Ventilator will cost about $1, 300.

Excalibur has two models up for grabs for 2012. The Eclipse XT’s black carbon fiber finish is perfect for hunters who’d rather lurk in the dark. This model can shoot arrows at 330 fps, has a draw weight of 200 lbs., and weighs just under 6. 5 lbs. The base model goes for about $920 and includes scope, quiver and various mounting hardware.

Additionally from Excalibur is the $590 Ibex SMF. This can sling a 350 grain arrow at more than 305 fps and has a draw weight of 175 lbs. The compact model which tips the scales at below 6 lbs., is only available as a kit that includes scopes, brackets, and quiver, among others.

U. S. -based PSE crossbows also have several new stuff for this year, like the 2012 Crossfire. This bang-for-buck crossbow can be had for as low as $450 but can shoot 100 grain bolts at 320 fps. The package comes with a scope, three 20-inch charger bolts, quiver, and a useful cocking strap.

The History of Crossbows

by on Jan.26, 2012, under Articles

Warfare is an endeavor that has frequently paved the way for human innovations. Some of these innovations were useful not only during wartime but during peacetime as well but some were purely made for war and for hunting. Take for example the crossbow, a weapon used to throw wooden projectiles into the air to pierce thru flesh, wood, steel and even stone. This article will go over the history of crossbow hunting in Europe, which is fundamentally a history of warfare.

5th Century BC

The gastraphetes is widely regarded as the earliest form of the crossbow in Europe, which is considered to be the forerunner of the catapult. Its invention and use in Europe dates back some time before 420 BC. The gastraphetes was used as an artillery weapon and was constructed of three parts:

1. Lower section: comprises of the case and affixed to the bow much like a horizontally placed crossbow.

2. Upper section: made-up of the slider and its mechanism which was made to be the same size and dimension as the case

The effectiveness and the productivity of the gastraphetes were advanced further thru the introduction of the ballista, which allowed the crossbow to fire larger projectiles at a faster rate. Due to the success of the crossbow ballista combination the crossbow became a lot more varied both in size and in use. Incidentally the smaller type of crossbow hunting weaponry was known as Scorpio.

Medieval Warfare

The crossbow came about around 1525 AD in the battle of Hastings. Back then the longbow was the projectile weapon of choice mainly because it was much simpler to produce, not to mention the fact that it needed only one operator and was more exact than a crossbow. Some even said the longbow was more sophisticated than the crossbow, which looked like a block of wood with a lopsided bow. The popularity of the crossbow was mainly due to three factors:

1. Easier operation

2. Longer range

3. Greater piercing capability

These three factors paved the way for the enhancement of a crossbow unit that were either used in conjunction with the longbow or where used for special operations to guard, to attack in open warfare or in siege operations as well.

Crossbow Hunting Instinct

by on Jan.25, 2012, under Articles

Although technology has progressed drastically throughout the ages, the hunting crossbow remains to be as a top choice among those who hunt for sport. It is most amusing, that despite the availability of rifles, many still prefer to use such an old-world weapon. While various explanations regarding such preference of modern-day hunters exist, it is most probable that the human instinct drives the need to hunt with such a weapon. No matter how greatly technology advances, and regardless of how significantly society changes, the human soul would always have a primal aspect: the hunting instinct.

The hunting instinct encompasses a myriad of tendencies. One’s desire to master for example, is a manifestation of such an instinct. After shooting an animal, one automatically feels an inexplicable assortment of emotions. At instances though, such emotions are dominated by pleasure, while in other cases pride engulfs one’s soul. Regardless of what one specifically feels after the hunt, it cannot be denied that one always looks forward to experiencing such a blissful state once again, as soon as possible. Those who have never been involved in a hunt would surely fail to comprehend such a unique delight.

The question remains though, as to why using an old-world weapon such as the crossbow satisfies and arouses the hunting instinct effectively. Even though modern weaponry allows for efficient hunting pursuits, one fails to experience the thrill of the hunt at its best. Present-day technology is always geared towards convenience, and riffles are actually the epitome of ease among weapons. As a worthy challenge drives the thrill of the hunt, it becomes clear as to why crossbows bring forth most satisfying experiences. Even cutting-edge crossbows variants retain the appeal of the original, ensuring that the challenge of the hunt remains intact.

Hunters who have always preferred rifles in their endeavors, and have never attempted to use a crossbow in their lives, should absolutely try using such an old-world weapon when the opportunity arises. Not surprisingly, as the will to hunt for sport is a means to gratify the hunting instinct, it would be ideal to use a weapon that is definitely capable of accomplishing such a subconscious goal. Of course, there are those who believe that these notions are nothing but hogwash. Proving that the hunting instinct exists, and that the thrill of the hunt truly satisfies certain human desires, remains simple though: allow such naysayers to shoot a hunting crossbow.

Crossbow Hunters: Regulations In the US

by on Jan.17, 2012, under Articles

The crossbow has been around for centuries and has been implemented in warfare to devastating effect. However, evolution of weaponry has rendered it obsolete in warfare but it has nonetheless gained a permanent spot in the heart of modern day hunters. Most hunters would prefer to use a rifle for its power and accuracy but there are still some who enjoy the thrill of shooting a crossbow and hunting with it. Those handicapped individuals that wish to take part in the activity can also do so with relative ease thanks to the technology and equipment of today. It is a fun and challenging activity and should be enjoyed by everyone no matter what their issue is, that is why my primary intent is to provide more information about hunting for the disabled, the basic principles, the laws covering it and all other pertinent details.

First and foremost, here is a small discussion of the many laws covering the area of crossbow hunting that varies according to state. If for example you are from Alaska then hunting is legal through archery season however you will need to secure a methods and means exemption form and just the same in most states you would have to acquire a handicapped permit to be able to hunt. Generally there are some states such as Arkansas and Illinois that are more meticulous with their requirements in the sense that they may require your crossbow to be modified in accordance with their safety standards. Realizing the law is essential because hunting for the handicapped would possibly require a special permit in some states to insure safety and to regulate this activity so that everyone wishing to partake can safely benefit from it.

Hunting for the handicapped will require a variety of equipment such as a wheelchair and a mount for the crossbow itself. The wheel chair can be operated using a mouthpiece. The mount is where it can be placed and attached to the wheelchair so that the hunter would not have to expend much energy carrying the bow and aiming it. There is also a trigger mechanism in the mouthpiece that releases the bolt for those handicapped above the waist. You can even operate the wheelchair through your chin and use your fingers to stabilize the crossbow. There are certainly plenty of options for handicapped hunters and numerous equipment to make them as efficient as any able bodied person. You don’t have to worry about the limitations you may think you have because the equipment available to you make sure that all existing or possible handicaps and limitations are compensated for in a manner which will insure optimum hunting.

With the basics covered, you can now grab your crossbow and head out into the woods. Remember to secure a permit and comply with the policies and requirements according to your state before engaging in this activity and also make sure you have the necessary equipment and have them calibrated according to state standards. It is important to be acquainted with the law so that you can afford the protection of the laws should you need it. Happy hunting!
