Things to Bring for Crossbow Hunting Trip

When preparing for crossbow hunting trip, bringing the right equipment and accessories can make a considerable difference in the result and the overall experience of the hunt, regardless whether the game hunted will be a deer, elk, birds or larger animals. Aside from the crossbow, preparations for the hunting trip includes obtaining the right gear like camouflage clothing, the proper arrow or any other additional bow sights or scopes to help the hunter be more successful in the field.

Naturally, it starts with finding the right crossbow. Cocking a crossbow requires strength, so the hunter should purchase something that he can comfortably use and suits his needs and physique. Otherwise, the crossbow might be too painful for him to handle which can affect the result of the hunt. It’s also important to bring the proper broad head arrow tip. For instance, a fixed blade broad head is generally recommended for hunting larger animals. Other attachments like bow sights and scopes help hunters be more accurate with their shots. Tree-stands are helpful when shooting with a downward trajectory, so hunters can be more stable while aligning on their stance and shot.

Blending with the environment is a crucial crossbow hunting strategy so having the right camouflage clothes can also make or break the hunting result. This typically depends on what type of game you will be hunted. For instance, when going for the whitetail deer, be prepared for the cold and dress accordingly. Be sure to wear layered clothing and underwear that would absorb moisture away from the body. Then there should be a fleece layer for added warmth. The outer camouflaged layer should also be properly insulated and windproof. Before purchasing any camouflage clothing, be sure to try them out and check whether they make too much noise during movement because this might scare off the animals. It’s also crucial to check any buttons, zippers or snaps on the outer layer.

Make sure to also bring the right gloves and footwear. Wear sturdy boots that protect against the cold and are designed for hiking. The right gloves should also protect the hunter from the cold and the gloves shouldn’t create a lot of noise when rubbed together. For headgear, wearing a baseball cap should do but it’s better to bring a wider brimmed, all-weather camouflaged hat just in case. Just as important as being armed with the right accessories, is being knowledgeable enough with the right tricks and strategies to make the crossbow hunting experience more gratifying.

Crossbow Hunting Games

Bows are a medieval hunting weapon that generally uses an arrow that is mounted on the body of the weapon. There have been so many names given to this type of weapon. And it is primarily used in warfare and hunting. But in today’s generation, they are utilized for hunting game and target shooting. Some people misinterpret bows as a killing weapon since it can kill animals with its sharp arrows. But bows are just an archery tool that can be used in hunting. A Crossbow compared to a conventional bow is much easier to use since there is less muscle strength needed to aim your target. It is more convenient for young individuals, women and older men to use.

Hunting games has been popular since the old times, and some make hunting games as their hobby. In playing these games — specifically with the use of bows — there are a lot of things that must be considered. First is the weight of the crossbow that you are utilizing, there are heavy types and there are lighter ones as well. The weight of the equipment will also dictate the power of the tool that you are using. Heavy ones that can deliver more than 80 pounds of energy are used in hunting bears and other big wild animals. While small and lighter ones that has, 40 to 60 pounds of energy are used for deer and turkey.

Second thing to consider in hunting games is that, your equipments and tools match the game perspective. In hunting, there are rules and regulations to be followed. And in the use of various bows, they aim their target with the use of sharp blades on their arrows. In hunting skinny animals such as deer, one needs to use an arrow with an expandable broad head. While boney and big animals need to have a fixed broad head blade arrow to be more accurate and precise when shooting.

Third thing to consider is the safety. As an archery equipment and a tool used in hunting, bows can be a threat to an individual. One wrong move and accidents may happen. In participating in hunting games, it is necessary to place safety as a priority, especially hunting with bows that are fired at shoulder level and can have a long range shot. It is necessary to have a clear and open shooting range to provide safety to other hunters as well.

Bow Fish Hunting

Bow fish hunting is one of those recreational activities that is gaining popularity worldwide. Roughly defined as the hunting of fish using bow fishing hunting bows, this is almost no different from hunting techniques that we see on land, with the exception of course that the ones being hunted are actually creatures underwater.

So how can you go on bow fish hunting? Of course, you got to have bow fishing hunting bows in order to be able to hunt. Compound bows and crossbows are among the most commonly used tools in this trade. Nevertheless, this is just the start of the challenge. It may possibly look easy, but using bows are not as easy as you think it is. It takes a lot of practice in order to be able to use this weapon effectively. What a person needs to develop to become a excellent archer/hunter is to have a sharp eye, a steady aim, and a steely focus. It would take a while before you master the art of using a bow, but once you do, it is going to be a good experience for sure.

Once you have mastered the art of using your bow fishing hunting bows, it is now time to go fishing. What kinds of fish can you actually catch while hunting? It all depends on the water that you are fishing on. Of course, one of the most common bow fishing grounds is at rivers. The most common fishes that are being hunted include different species of carps and catfishes. These fishes have weights ranging from 5 to 20 kilograms, and are going to be superb catches if you are going to hit them. However, you must take note that just like bow hunting on land, there are certain fishes that are restricted from being hunted. Ask around if you are not quite sure what these fishes are.

In most places, you can actually use your bow fishing hunting bows all year round. However, fish are more plenty during the warm months as this is the time that they are closer to the surface because they are looking for food. However, keep in mind that there are regulations to be followed with regard to fishing. Not only there are restricted fishes that are not allowed to be hunted, but also you are only allowed to catch a certain number of fish in a given day in order to maintain their numbers in the wild.

New 2012 PSE Crossfire Crossbow VS Firefox Crossbow

What are Precision Shooting Equipment Crossbows?

It is a company in the United States that was founded by Pete Shipley in 1970, which manufactures equipment for archery. PSE started out with their ordinary bows, which are now considered to be conventional or the old types. But today, PSE Crossbows are the result of the continuous development of the engineering and technology in bows. This is just for the record and additional information, PSE, as of now, is the only company in the United States that manufactures and sells crossbows.

Their crossbow models are categorized into five (5): TAC 15, Foxfire, Crossfire, Reaper, & Copperhead TS. This article will entail the features of two of their crossbows; they are the Crossfire crossbows and the Foxfire crossbows.

PSE 2012 Crossfire Crossbow Features:

There are two (2) types of this model: Crossfire Crossbow with a 4×32 Scope / Crossfire Crossbow with Red Dot Scope.

Features: Both have a Power Stroke of 12 ½”, a Kinetic Energy of 97-91 ft. Lbs., Its overall length is at 36 ½”, while its overall width is at 28 ¾”, and with a speed of 320-310 fps; 425 gear bolt and Axle-to-Axle of 25 7/8”.

PSE Foxfire Crossbow Features:

The PSE Foxfire Crossbow has two (2) types as well: Foxfire Crossbow with a 4×32 Scope / Crossfire Crossbow with Red Dot Scope.

Features: Both have a Power Stroke 14″, a Kinetic Energy 109-102 ft. Lbs., Its overall length is at 38 1/2″ while its overall width is at 27″, and with a speed of 340-330 fps; 425 gear bolt and Axle-to-Axle of 24″

Summarization:

Based from the above given specs and features, we may consider technically, both the Crossfire Crossbow and the Foxfire Crossbow are almost similar with their respective features. But if we are going to make a deep evaluation between the two, we can say that Foxfire Crossbows have more strength in its power stroke and kinetic energy. Especially with their respective speeds, Foxfire crossbow still has more speed than that of Crossfire Crossbow.

Nevertheless, both types of PSE crossbows can deliver that performance that one hunter will be looking for. They were both manufactured to perform and deliver the goods to the professional and non-pro hunters in the United States.

How to Kill a Zombie With a Crossbow

Do you want to know how to kill a zombie with a crossbow? Well it’s pretty easy, just aim for the head. It is the first rule on killing zombies. Zombies — are pretty much undead creatures — still have human bodies. And the easiest way to kill a human being is to attack the brain, which is located inside the head. The same rule also applies on how to kill a zombie with a crossbow. Shooting an arrow into the head of a zombie will easily hit the brain, killing all physical movements of the targeted zombie.

How to kill a zombie in style? Well that’s a different story. The survivor can play Robin Hood by aiming at the head of a zombie and trying to hit another zombie head from behind the first targeted zombie. But this only works when the zombies are stationary. If someone can do the aiming while being chased by hordes of zombies, that guy is considered as a “rock star” in the zombie killing business.

Alternative ways to kill a zombie with a crossbow is by shooting the arrow on the lower limbs of the zombie. This will make the zombie fall and incapacitated for a while. But always remember that zombies tend to crawl towards their target so always remember to shoot the zombie in the head just to make sure that it won’t attack any unwary survivors by surprise. Another alternative way is to shoot the zombie on their bodies or hands to make them unable to grab any individual. This will make them less dangerous, but this method doesn’t guarantee that the zombie will die immediately. But the main rule on how to kill a zombie with a crossbow is still the first rule, aim for the head. Shooting in the head of a zombie guarantees that the zombie won’t rise and feed again.

Crossbow Deer Hunting: The Kill Shot (Best Place to Shoot a Deer for Instant Kill)

Hunting deer using crossbows is a lot different than using rifles. Rifles are meant to kill instantly from shock while bows kill animals from haemorrhage. Since arrows curve differently than bullets, the distance difference between hunting with crossbows and rifles is also different. Where the hunter should aim varies depending on the distance of the target. If it’s just 20 yards or closer, the aim should be lower because the arrow will go on an upward trajectory. When it’s 30 yards, the arrow should be pointed at the middle or the lower body. At 40 yards, the aim should be higher to make up for the arrow’s downward trajectory. It takes a bit of practice to know at which distance the shots can ensure a complete kill.

When using crossbows, being familiar with the deer’s anatomy is an important tip and a huge advantage. Aiming for the heart and the lungs is the traditional shot that yields the highest kill percentage. An example of this is the quartering away shot, wherein the deer is angled away from the hunter. This gives the crossbow hunter a good view to target the heart and the lungs. Quartering towards is another traditional kill shot, although it’s more challenging. Even with the slightest change in angle, the arrow might just penetrate one lung and not kill the deer, or worse, the arrow would just deflect off the shoulder blade. Broadside shots are the most ideal kill shot since the hunters have an unobstructed view of the deer’s body. This is also the best way to get a double lung penetration. Some hunters go for the neck and head, but some would argue that head shots should be avoided. Although it can sometimes result to an instant kill, some arrows would just hit the skull. Head shots are more suitable to rifle hunters, wherein bullets can break off bone.

A string can be attached to the arrow for better deer tracking after the shot, but keep in mind that this can affect the arrow’s flight especially in long distance shots. Deer can haemorrhage a lot before finally dying down. How long it takes for them to fall down depends on how deep the arrow penetration is or the angle of the shot. Usually, a mortally wounded deer cannot go farther than 250 yards. Even when using crossbows, it’s still important to stay quiet even after the shot’s been made to make sure the deer doesn’t stray farther.

What Time of the Day, Is the Best to go Hunting?

What is the best time to go hunting, is it morning, evening or night? This question has been a debate among hunters. If you want to be successful in your hunting, finding the right time for hunting is essential. Generally, it is best to hunt in the morning for the practical reason of having a good sight of your prey. However, practically, the right time for hunting depends on what animal you are going to hunt. A good hunter should carefully study how animals live and their behavior. Hunters should also be knowledgeable about their prey’s habitat.

For instance, if you plan on hunting a deer, the best time is before sunrise. Deer come out to feed in a cold morning and will stay active during those time until the sun starts to warm up the day. When it’s already warm, they tend to look for a place to bed down and rest. However, it is important to note that there’s always an exception to this right timing to go hunting. You can go hunting whether morning or evening and night when its rut season. It is the time of year when a male deer looks for does to mate with. Whether its morning or evening, deer hunting would be at its best during rut season.

Another example of prey to know the best time to hunt is hog. It is best to hunt a hog either late afternoon or evening. It is extremely important to know when a particular animal would come out and become easy prey – and when hunting for squirrels and rabbits, don’t go for them when the weather is hot. Squirrels and rabbits have parasites that thrive in their bodies during warm days therefore, you have to wait until the weather is cool. You wouldn’t like to catch a disease from a squirrel or rabbit so don’t insist on going hunting for these animals on a warm season.

Crossbow hunting became popular for the last few years – why is this so? There are areas that prohibit the use of rifle or the standard or compound bow. Also, some disabled people are not allowed to use the bow, likewise the elderly people as they don’t have the strength to stretch the string to release an arrow, which is one way of avoiding harm or injury by untimely release. There has been a debate between the uses of crossbow and rifle as to their usefulness and accuracy for hunting. The latter is found to be the best choice but due to restrictions of its use, the former is being preferred.

Handicapped Hunters Benefits

Through the development of technology, people with disability can now enjoy the benefits of crossbow hunting. Rules and regulations regarding hunting vary from state to state, and there are specific guidelines regarding disabled persons. A permit is required so the hunter will be allowed to use adaptive equipment. It’s best to consult the local Department of Natural Resources for any further details on crossbow hunting.

Crossbow hunting is meaningful outdoor exercise for anyone, especially for the handicapped. This activity is not only a physical sport but this also requires a good mental ability. With regular practice, archery can improves a person’s motor skills, mental health and upper body. It can also give anyone a heightened sense of concentration and better hand-eye coordination. Crossbow hunting is also a fun and fairly inexpensive sport, especially for the casual hobbyist. For those hunters interested in taking their crossbow techniques to a more competitive level, more complicated equipment is available but these can be pricier.

Crossbows are often the ideal suggestion for the physically impaired. Some disabled hunters are able to use compound bows with attached adaptive equipment. Any physical limitation in the shoulder, elbow, wrist or arm movement may require adaptive equipment. Without the help of these, it would be too difficult for disabled persons to do crossbow hunting. Attaching this to the crossbow allows enough room for movement that would’ve otherwise been too impossible especially for disabled persons. An example is the drawlock or draw keep, which holds the bow until the trigger is pressed. The disadvantage for using drawlocks it gives an added weight to the bow.

Complete resources on crossbow hunting for the handicapped are available through the PCBA or Physically Challenged Bow Hunters of America, a non-profit organization providing assistance to disabled persons interested in crossbow hunting. Their resources include a list of hunting techniques, providers of adaptive equipment, and other useful general information for the handicapped hunter. They work closely with rehabilitation centers and hospitals as a way to promote bow hunting as a good sport and they have able-bodied volunteers to help with their cause.

PCBA believes that archery and bow hunting is an effective recreational therapy for persons with disabilities. The PCBA also holds regular hunting and archery events, which fosters camaraderie and good sportsmanship. Aside from developing one’s physical and mental skills, crossbow hunting and archery can help develop the confidence and gives an empowering sense of accomplishment.

Hunters Tracking Down There Prey

When it’s time for deer hunting, hunters are set to prepare to go hunting with there fellow hunters or with friends. Setting a camp is where they start their hunt. Then they have to look for a buck sign. A buck or deer rub is the sign that hunters look for and once they see a rub, hunters use it to find ideal place for hunting.

What is a rub? It is an abrasion due to a male deer that is rubbing his forehead to remove the velvet on his antlers on the tree’s base. These rubs appear in early fall or late summer when male bucks rub the velvet off their antlers (which are newly grown). Male deer also tend to make a rub during a rut season to show territory against another male deer and likewise attract a doe to mate with. The rub’s size depends on the deer’s size.

Seeing a fresh rub would mean that a deer has just been there. An old rub reveals that a buck made it long time enough that it is hard to determine the travel pattern. A good travel pattern is revealed by a fresh rub – this is how to trail a buck or deer. It is important to set a good timing to find fresh rubs. Then, find the trail and study the travel pattern. Finding a trail is best if done early morning when there is mist or fog.

A deer prefer to move in cover and besides, it cannot smell man’s scent when it’s foggy. A hunter should be able to find cluster of rubs near a buck’s bedding area. The hunter can see rubs space apart to another rub that makes the trail. He can tell when and what time the rubs was made by looking at what side of three the rub is on. If it’s facing the feeding area, he should know that the buck has made the rub on its way back to bed. On the other hand, if the rub is facing the bedding area, it is likely that the rub was made in the afternoon or evening and headed to the feeding area.

It is time to make a tree stand and wait for that buck to show up within your eyesight. If you’re in an area where the use of rifle or standard bow is prohibited, it is best to have a crossbow to hunt with. In cases like this, you should know as a hunter how a deer reacts when hit. A deer that is hit with a bow usually reacts to the hit but due to the fact that it does not know what has happened, it will return to what they are doing. In this situation, the hunter can find a trail again to look for his buck.

However, this would be different if the hunter has used a rifle to do a hit. He would only be looking for blood trails and following blood trails can be a lot easier than looking for a buck with a bow attached to its body. It’s like starting all over again – finding a buck through rubs and the only thing that makes it easier is that the buck you’re looking for has weakened and it cannot go farther. You may find a disadvantage of crossbow hunting but its better that way when hunting in areas wherein it is restricted to use other weapons.

Hunting Climate Changes

The history of hunting goes back to prehistoric times, with man using his knowledge and creativity to create weapons and tools designed to bring down even the largest of game. With spears and clubs made of stone and wood, man had to get close to his prey to subdue it. Man took one-step further by inventing the bow and arrow, allowing him to kill prey from a distance, minimizing the risk of injury. As human knowledge grew, more sophisticated hunting implements were developed, including the invention of the hunting crossbow, and finally, the gun.

The earliest crossbows had its roots in Europe, China, and the Middle East. During ancient times, crossbows were used mainly as implements of war. It is only during recent times that hunting crossbows were introduced. In North America, hunting crossbows are use to hunt deer, wild boar, bear, and caribou. In the United States, the uses of hunting crossbows are subject to regulations, and most states restricting its use only for the handicapped.

Most countries allow hunting of certain game to control overpopulation. However, recent changes in the environment such as climate change are affecting hunting conditions. Man-made forest fires, industrial logging, air pollution, and clearing of forests for development projects are just a few human activities that contribute to the degradation of the environment that, in turn causes climate change.

Man-made forest fires, whether accidental or deliberate, destroys large areas of forests that serve as habitat for a diverse number of plant and animal life. As industrial logging reduces the number of mature trees, it also damages the young ones as the trees crashes through the forest floor. Air pollution contributes to the accumulation of greenhouse gases, raising temperatures and disrupting seasonal patterns. Lastly, clearing of forests destroy watersheds, causing floods and disruption in the water cycle. The combined effects of such activities have made it difficult for hunters to find game in its natural habitat, which is further aggravated by shorter hunting seasons.

The weather, particularly temperature, affects the spread of parasites and pests. Warming temperature makes it possible for disease-carrying insects and parasites to devastate entire animal populations. Excess carbon dioxide diminishes the nutritional value of plants. As a result, big game herds end up dying of malnutrition. Drought caused by climate change forces animal populations to move out of their natural territory to find food, even encroaching on human habitation which pose health and safety risks for both man and animal.

A Hunters Tree Stand Experience

One of the most exciting and perhaps unique experiences I had some time ago was tree stand hunting with my father. We started out early in the morning, me carrying the sling bag containing a rope, knife and pistol and a jug filled with water while my father toted a large crossbow, a favorite tool for hunting deer. The crossbow is always a trustworthy hunting weapon but constant practice is required in using it because most inexperienced shooters tend to miss the game or fail to disable it. It is not a convenient tool for taking down a prey from a distance, but a good bow and a skilled shooter can disable prey at 60 or 70 yards the most.

Now, what made the hunting trip fascinating was the permission to use the crossbow. But, what made it more unique was that we wouldn’t just sit and wait and glass through the forest floor for game. Father had bought a platform that looked like two large seats, which he had erected up a high, thick tree. It was a tree stand.

Basically, a tree stand is another hunter tool that elevates the hunter to a level where his view of the area is improved. It is set up after scouting a potentially animal-filled location. A good location for a tree stand likewise involves adequate cover such that animal cannot easily spot you. On the downside, using a tree stand may cause hazardous falls and injuries, so proper precaution and use of safety equipment is recommended by manufacturers. The tree stand father had installed had two harnesses attached to the trunk. Basic tree stands also have a belt harness to prevent the hunter from falling or losing balance.

Before climbing the tree stand, the crossbow was tied securely on one end of the rope that we brought. This was used later for hauling it in, freeing our hands from carrying it while climbing the tree. While waiting, dad gave a few tips on finding the perfect location (looking for deer signs, e. g. scat, deer tracks and tree trunk scars from rubbing of antlers against the bark). According to him, the area we were in was a feeding place for deer, as evidenced by short clipped leaves. Sure enough, a few hours later, we spotted a white tailed deer about thirty yards away, lazily grazing a bush. The tree stand provided the perfect vantage point for targeting the animal, and when the arrow was released, I knew I was bringing home a trophy from this trip.

Crossbow Hunting in the Rain

Hunting in the rain using a crossbow can be challenging. Hunters will agree that a little drizzle and mist can be advantageous to some degree, but a strong downpour is especially difficult, particularly when it comes to tracking game. However, there might be some instances where the weather becomes unpredictable and a hunter gets caught in the middle of a heavy rain. In these cases, it’s better to come prepared with the right gear and clothing.

As a precaution, when there’s a possible chance of rain, wax or oil the crossbow while preparing for the hunt. Bringing a plastic bag where it could fit once the downpour begins is also a good idea. However, keep in mind to take it out as soon as possible, otherwise, condensation in the bag can ruin it. If rust does get into the crossbow, wiping the affected area with a gun cleaner can do the trick. A water-displacing spray can also be used for removing moisture in the hard to reach nooks and crannies.

Besides the crossbow, preparing the right gear and clothing is also important. Quality rain hunting gear maybe expensive but for the hunting aficionados, this can be a good investment since it can be more durable for more outdoor activities. Bringing a wide-brimmed hat and wearing warm and comfortable camouflage clothing are also things to consider. Wet ground can be slippery, so finding the right kind of boots can prevent any bad fall or accidents that can ruin the hunting experience.
Hunting-Under-the-rain
Tracking is the most challenging part of hunting under the rain. The rain covers any noise, blood trails and any other tracks so hunting becomes really tricky. Deer can still be around even during a light rain but once the rain gets heavier, they start to disperse and hide. Meanwhile, hogs are better to hunt in the rain since these animals enjoy the mud. Shooting in close distances is also recommended because the rain makes it difficult to see the arrow’s trajectory, plus shooting from a lesser distance gives better arrow penetration of the prey.

Hunting under the rain, especially during a heavy downpour, presents a more dangerous hunting situation so it’s best to bring along a hunting companion. It’s always better to have someone along to help in case something happens. Whether it’s a bright sunny weather or an overcast day, safety should be a foremost concern for a crossbow hunter.

Hunting under the Snow

Two hunters are walking down the forest with a pair of crossbows. They are there for one reason and that is waiting for a big game animal to appear. They wait patiently for their prey and

Crossbow-hunting-under-snow
it seemed like an eternity. Then, there is a rustling of leaves in the stillness of the forest and movement. A pair of antlers appears and the two become excited. The weather is somewhat drizzly, but the wind has died down and the deer smelled the air.

One of the hunters took aim, and then fired an arrow towards the animal. The deer was taken aback after being hit, then it ran as fast it could. However, it stopped after a few meters weakened by blood loss. The two caught up with the animal and watched it breathe slowly. In a few minutes, the deer was about to become a trophy for these two.

It is quite fun to go deer-hunting on a fine sunny day, but hunting under inclement conditions is a different story. Incidentally, deer

Barnett-Buck-Commander-Crossbow
are the favorite targets of most hunters because these animals pose a challenge to them because of their agility and speed. Another thing is that deer are not endangered animals and they are in fact very numerous and can be found in forests or woody areas. For this reason, a crossbow is a very good hunting weapon that can be used to kill many deer because of its precise accuracy and very feather-light arrows.

Hunting in the snow can be very difficult because of the wind, rain, and the snow itself. Hunters may have a hard time shooting arrows from their crossbows because they may become very erratic in their flight when it is raining. One hunter intimated that he once shot arrows that were very light, but landed beyond their targets because of heavy rain. Other obvious reasons that affect the efficiency of this weapon would be the wind and blustery conditions and these can render even the best crossbow arrows ineffective. Snowy weather will not help either because aside from its effects on the weapon, its user may have a hard time shooting arrows accurately because they make winter clothing denser.

Since a crossbow is made of metal, there is a great chance that rust will develop because of the moisture that came from the snow and rain. Additionally, if the strings in the weapon are not waxed, then the arrows may not fire very well.

America’s Top Crossbow Manufacturers: a Brief Overview

Crossbows are the weapon of choice for the outdoorsmen who want the convenience and the power of a pistol and the excitement of bow hunting. It isn’t as restricted and regulated as guns (although there are strict regulations for hunting). It is also a fairly lucrative niche, what with the said hunting season and target competitions held all over the country. Crossbows are generally expensive though; the tactical ones can cost up to $1,600. However, you can always find beginner models for as low $50. Here are some of the world’s well-known crossbow makers, producing gear for the beginners, expert marksmen and everything in between.

Barnett Crossbows

Barnett-CrossbowBarnett is a leading name in the world of crossbows. All of their main lines crossbows are made in US, and they make both re-curve and compound models. When it comes to innovation, Barnett is the byword in the crossbow makers’ industry. It has sold over a million crossbows in a span of 50 years; a testament to the company’s claim that every new Barnett crossbow is built to be faster, stronger and better; not bad for a company which has risen from a hobby.

Some of the technology offered in their re-curve model is a red dot site of adjustable intensity. This allows the shooter to adjust the target light strength based on lighting conditions. Other technology is a built in cranking device that makes it easier to load and cock.

Barnett crossbows are engineered to meet the needs of the avid hunter – as well as the novice archer, the expert marksman and the slingshot enthusiast. It was pioneered by the self-cocking mechanism of the Commando crossbow, followed by the first compound ‘Demon’ model, and the Quick Detach Front end feature which are found on every Barnett crossbow. Nowadays, Barnett crossbows are regarded highly for its power, performance and value for money; making it the top choice of people who are looking for weapons built for the kill.

Some of the technologies included in the Barnett weapons are its patented Magnesium STR riser, an anti-vibration (AVI) isolation system such as AVI limbs for extreme wear and tear resistance, AVI Bolt retainer and Foot Stirrup for silent and speedy release, Gordon/Barnsdale laminated limbs, GAM composite stock for optimum lightweight-ness and compactness, light trigger pull and a pistol-like grip. It even has ergonomics down pat with its adjustable stock and cheek piece.

Crosman

Darton-ArcheryCrosman is better known as an air-gun manufacturer. It was incorporated in 1924 when the Crosman Brothers sold out to Frank Hahn. While most of its history involves the development of BB guns, the company has recently delved into the production of high-quality crossbows.

It has a long-standing reputation of manufacturing dependable and solid products at a very reasonable price. When most crossbow makers where focusing on accuracy and power to cater to hunters, Crosman targeted the novice archers and started to manufacture crossbows of a purely recreational quality. Today, they are known to produce crossbows, such as the Teton which has the earmarks of bone-crushing performance.

Crosman crossbows feature Quad limb designs using solid stock, sculptured hand guards, pistol grips and reduced forward weight for ergonomics; as well as technologies like the Lightning Touch trigger and Precision Optics. Note that these crossbows can only be bought as a package, which is not a bad thing since accessories included are the very handy quick-detach quiver, a cocking assistance rope and the mentioned optics. Crosman tapped sister company Centerpoint for its easy-to-operate scope with its elevation and windage adjustment turrets and brass knobs producing audible clicks. The Teton launches arrows at an excellent 320 FPS. There is hardly another crossbow that can match the Crosman’s Teton in power (in its class range).

Darton Archery

Darton-ArcheryDarton has over 60 years of experience in the manufacture of archery supplies. This crossbow maker is well-known for its fast-shooting crossbows that have captured the interest of crossbow enthusiasts. Darton has managed to imbue balance and dependability into its crossbow line with topnotch materials and workmanship. You’d be surprised that Dalton nails the aesthetics aspect as well. Darton is one of the oldest companies in the field. It was established in 1950 as a division of Container Specialties, a manufacturer of leather goods for mill workers. The business also provides products for Detroit’s automotive industry, which made the nature of the trade seasonal as the auto industry shuts down during the summer (in that period). The owner of CS then decided to venture into the production of archery supplies such as gloves, thanks to its leatherworking division, and eventually moved on to produce high-performance crossbows. Darton archery manufactures crossbows with efficient alloy energy cams and hard-anodized Teflon impregnated barrels. It also features an aircraft-grade aluminum riser which makes for lightweight and solid crossbows. It also has the innovative rifle-style safety feature and an adjustable butt plate. Cocking the Darton crossbow is easy, thanks to the patented E-Z draw cocking winch. The crossbows also have a rugged trigger mechanism that makes for a smooth pull, and an anti-dry fire mechanism.

Diamond Archery

Diamond-ArcheryDiamond archery was a leading manufacturer of archery supplies and equipment. Bows manufactured by this company is deemed to be the best cam bows in the market. In 2004, it was acquired by Bowtech technology. Bowtech took the archery industry by storm in 2000 when it developed the Black Knight, which was marketed with the tagline “the world’s fastest bows” and challenging other manufacturers for a chronograph-judged competition. The unprecedented sales resulted to rapid growth. Today, the Diamond Archery line is marketed by Bowtech and shares some of the technology of the latter.

A notable example is the Center Pivot technology featured in the Iceman compound bow and the Stryker crossbow. The technology attaches the bow riser near the center of the limbs. This provides great stabilization and control of the laminate split limbs, resulting to overall balance. Another shared technology is the FLX guard. It is a cable containment system that tackles the effects of too much cable tension and in inflexible cable guards. The FLX guards flex inward when the bow is drawn, absorbing the brunt of the cable guard torque that would have put a toll on the riser. It provides additional tune-ability and accuracy.

Eastman Outdoors

Eastman-Outfitters-CrossbowThe founder of Eastman Outdoors Inc. is Rob Eastman – president and equity stakeholder in Eastman International, overseeing various operations, particularly those of Eastman Outdoors, which offers products geared for the active outdoorsman. While the more popular categories are outdoor gourmet and wild game, it has now ventured into the crossbow market with the Xforce.

Even though it is a beginner in the crossbow makers’ field, the Xforce has the earmarks of a good piece of equipment, with its manufacture entailing the basics of good crossbow-making technology. Still, the Xforce is designed as a mid-range crossbow and is targeted for the beginner crossbow hunter who wants serious equipment at a good price.

It features a machined aluminum barrel and riser, aluminum allow-cams and high-performance quad limbs capable of kinetic energy of up to 117 pounds, with launch speeds amounting to 300 FPS enough to make it useable for hunting. Other features are the integral cocking winch mounting, all-metal machined trigger and sight bridge, Singe dot Red Dot sight, synthetic composite stock and tunable synthetic cables and strings and a Weaver scope base. Notable is the SilenTech technology – a special coating that greatly reduces noise and vibration.

Excalibur Crossbows

Excalibur-CrossbowExcalibur was founded in 1983 by Bill and Kath Troubridge and has built its reputation on producing efficient, accurate hunting crossbows that were actually designed with hunting in mind and have the features that are most useful for hunters. Each of their crossbows also comes with a special instructional DVD that will teach you how to get the most out of your bow.Notable features of Excalibur crossbows include stocks made with advanced composite technology that are not only warm to the touch but durable enough to stand up to the worst wear and tear, triggers that reduce the pull to less than 3 lb for the most accurate targeting and a modular recursive limb system that produces bolt speeds faster than most compound bows without their weight or other mechanical problems. Excalibur’s newest crossbow model is the Axiom, which has a draw weight of just 175 lb but is capable of launching arrows with speeds of up to 305 fps.

Excalibur is the crossbow maker of the crossbow hunters. The company does not care to produce heavily-stylized crossbows. Instead, they focus on usability – accuracy, reliability and efficiency. Excalibur prides itself for not relying on armchair product engineers for the designs – they employ the ideas of crossbow hunters to come up with gear that are truly meant for hunting.

Excalibur utilizes lightning-fast recurve limbs for its crossbows. The flagship product, Equinox, features an ergonomic thumbhole stock. It was also designed with reduce total length to make way for easy cocking and a steadier hold; and not surprisingly, downrange performance was not at all compromised. Excalibur products are also camouflage-decorated and come with yet another ergonomic feature – an adjustable cheekpiece. Excalibur optics is also excellent, with its Multi Red-dot hunting accessory package utilizing reflex technology and an electronic sighting system. Yet another accessory that would make topnotch hunting experiences is the S5 string shock and sound suppression system that is as effective as it is durable.

So it’s not surprising that the company has bagged the US National Crossbow Championships award for the last 8 years, as well as the Canadian 3-D Championship crossbow class for the last 8 years.

Horton Crossbows

Horton-CrossbowHorton, which was founded close to fifty years ago by Bernard Horton, is a leading manufacturer as well and is noted for its wide variety of crossbow models which are appropriate for hunters of all ages and skill levels, and are also available in a range of prices. Technology they offer is things like an ambidextrous cheek piece which suits any shooter in any shooting position, allowing shooting adjustments quickly. Light trigger mechanisms giving the hunter extra shooting capability and accuracy.Their 2010 crossbow models range from the Legacy series of lightweight but accurate recursive crossbows which can launch arrows at speeds ranging from 312 to 350 fps, to the Vision 175 with Horton’s patented Front String technology that ensures optimal balance for accurate targeting while still remaining compact with a length of just 34-1/2” and is capable of firing arrows with speeds of up to 325 fps.

Parker Crossbow

Parker-CrossbowAttention to detail – that is what makes Parker Compound Bows Inc. one of the best crossbow makers in the world. Bob Errett, the current CEO of the company started out in the archery field as an employee of legendary Fred Bear’s Bear Archery. In 1984, Bob parted ways with Bear to form Nationwide Archery, which went on to be a major manufacturer of archery supplied for 17 years.

From 1996 onwards, the company focused on the production of compound bows. In 2003, a company merger resulted to Nationwide Archery assimilating into Parker Bows. The company has started developing a new line of crossbows in 2002, having recognized the viability of the market, evidenced by the thriving crossbow seasons. Parker is well-recognized in the crossbow market as the producer of well-balanced, lightweight and high-performing crossbows, which is the result of integrating the technology of manufacturing high-performance compound bows into the production of crossbows.

Parker crossbows feature a five-position retractable stock, machined built-in scope base, Picatiny rail for accessories such as the Red Hot high-velocity crossbow strings with C3 Serving, and Advanced trigger system with safety and anti-dry fire mechanism, an adjustable forearm for a good fit and balance, and inverted cam design, as well as the Buss Cable terminated in-limb form for added strength and load balance, an ergonomic pistol grip and vented limb pockets.

PSE Archery

PSE-Archery-Compound-BowForty years ago, PSE (Precision Shooting Equipment) founder Pete Shepley, was working for another corporation as a product engineer and designing archery equipment during lunch hour. He first experimented on bow release aids. He developed a flexible arrow vane to replace the traditional feathers. Thus, a perfect compound bow (his first) was invented. It was introduced at an Indiana tournament and within a week, he received 200 orders. The following weeks, requests reached 700 with customers ringing in from all over the country (and he only had to rely on word-of-mouth advertising at the time).

Nowadays, PSE is the country’s leading archery equipment manufacturer with 120,000 SF factory located in Tucson, Arizone. , holding twenty patens for bow designs and archery. A lot of effort is put into Research and Development, which is pretty much how Shepley managed to nail his first compound bow (and the first hundred requests).Advanced techniques are employed in the production of PSE crossbows. The company pioneered the use of solid aluminum for bow risers, reducing total weight and increasing strength. They also manufacture crossbows with an Integrated Quick Cocking Design Reload system, requiring force as low as 4 lbs, as well as an adjustable rear stock. It also uses a rail-less and therefore, frictionless design, increasing the string life.

TenPoint Crossbow Technologies

TenPoint-CrossbowTenpoint Crossbow Technologies is one of America’s leading crossbow makers, and one that is recognized for constantly being on the cutting edge of crossbow technology. Tenpoint is also a name in the same class as the manufacturers already mentioned, and they offer unique material hybrids in their weapons giving you some of the strongest and lightest weapons on the market. The company was founded in 1994 by Rick Bednar, the former Chief Operating Officer of Horton Technologies. They hold various patents pertaining to triggers, grip safeties and barrels, incorporating aircraft grade metals. Its first product was the Huntmaster Advantage crossbow; at present, Tenpoint holds eleven patents in the US with fourteen more pending, and has two successful brands, TenPoint and Wicked Ridge. Its product range includes not just high-performance crossbows but also a wide range of accessories.

Some of TenPoint Crossbow’s significant technological innovations include:

  • PowerTouch triggers that are now standard in all of the company’s TenPoint and 6 Point Series crossbows and has a lighter pull compared to standard triggers available on most other bows.
  • Dry-fire-inhibitor (DFI) prevents the crossbow from firing when there is no bolt loaded on the flight deck, avoiding potential damage to the bow, as well as injury to the user, that can result from dry firing.
  • AccuDraw cocking aids help users cock bows with heavier draw weights and auto-retracts the string after every use.
  • GripSafety secondary safety helps the user avoid injury by ensuring that thumbs and fingers are in the proper position before the trigger can be pulled.

For 2010, TenPoint’s newest model is the Turbo XLT, which features a compact bow assembly that measures just 13.5-inches when cocked but has a draw weight of 180 lb, enough to deliver a 420-grain bolt at 315 fps with 92.5 ft/lb of kinetic energy.

Carbon Revolution for Crossbow

Carbon Crossbow

Many crossbow manufacturers are now using carbon materials for their products. Materials still used are various alloys and aluminum, wood and plastic. All of these materials have various positive and negative aspects.

How Carbon Benefits Crossbows?

Barnett-Ghost-CRT-Crossbow

The greatest benefit of carbon material is that it is incredibly light, strong and durable. This is why it is used in a vast array of technology and is popular. Carbon crossbows are going to be much lighter than crossbows which use wood and metals and other materials. This is an advantage to the hobbyist who is shooting at target ranges and the hunter who is using the tool to bring down game. And this light quality of carbon makes it even easier to transport and travel with the crossbow. Having light equipment to carry is a great benefit in any outdoor hobby. If the person is a serious hunter, they will most likely be out in the woods or similar environment for hours, if not even days. Having a light tool makes the carrying much easier. As well, a light tool is easier to manipulate and react with, and this benefits a hunter who may have to make quick reactions to moving game. The hobbyist may want more versatility in their weapon, and maybe shoot at moving targets and simulated reaction targets. Carbon will fulfill this need.

Despite its light make-up, the material is incredibly strong. In many cases it is stronger than certain alloys and plastics. For any often used tool or weapon, strength and durability are incredibly important factors. Not only from the wear of being used – thrown on the ground, dragged through brush and more – but also from a reliability factor. A strong and durable weapon strikes more confidence in the owner and provides reliability. The combination that this material provides is really second to none. It may be the best material available for the combination of weight and strength and durability.

Carbon crossbows, as with other equipment with carbon material tends to be very expensive. But, this is reflective of quality material. The life of this material is incredibly long and the advantages it provides outside of longevity can’t be matched. It is beneficial for the serious hobbyist and hunter, who not only demand all the great possible qualities their weapon can offer, but also for the beginner who knows they will be dedicated to the sport and will receives all the advantages of a great weapon right away.

New 2011 Crossbows Made of Carbon

TenPoint-Carbon-Fusion-CLS-CrossbowVarious manufacturers, including Barnett Crossbows and TenPoint Crossbows, make carbon crossbows, and some are available in the market now. The all new Barnett Ghost with CRT (Carbon Riser Technology) is a highly anticipated model and is now available. It is carbon based and is about 1 LBs less than the aluminum version while providing all the greatest aspects the weapon can offer. While Barnett brings us the new Ghost series, TenPoint’s new Carbon Fusion CLS and Carbon Xtra CLS also feature the carbon design. With industry’s first ever woven carbon fiber barrel, these two new lighter and quieter crossbows will hit the market in 2011. Thanks to the technology similar to that used for airframe of Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, the Carbon Fusion CLS’s barrel reduces significantly of 20 oz from its original Phantom CLS design.

Carbon really is the next wave in technology for crossbows. It is by far the best combination material and more and more manufacturers will concentrate on it. This will benefit all crossbow enthusiasts who will be getting the best technology and material in their hands.

Hunting With a Crossbow or Rifle?

Hunting With a Crossbow or Rifle?

Hunting is a great way to experience a thrilling, often challenging, and what can be a very highly rewarding sport during most times of the year, depending on where you live.  Be it a high powered rifle, a crossbow or compound bow, whatever you choose, you will be able to go after game big and small. The potential rewards and the excitement gained in hunting are achieved differently with your choice of equipment. Being a responsible sportsman is of most importance, whatever firearm or device you are using, and as a responsible sportsman and hunter, safety and proper preparation before the season begins is very important.

Horton-TRT-Compound-Crossbow-CB514The crossbow is becoming an ever increasingly popular means of hunting prey, rather than a compound bow or a rifle. Many areas are now opening up to the use of a crossbow, when restrictions might apply to either that of a compound bow or rifle.  Whereas the crossbow is legal to use, the use of one offers a unique challenge to the hunter. The crossbow has the added convenience of a rifle as well as having the restrictive range of archery equipment, and is well worth giving it a try.

Several areas have or are now considering banning the use of high powered rifles, so the trend towards crossbows and compound bows is far more active. In North America, game populations and specifically whitetails continue to grow, and to curtail these ever growing populations the crossbow is seen as an effective method. To control the deer numbers, game management authorities, can see the use of this often primitive weapon addresses the need, hence the growing popularity of this choice of weapon.

When comparing, one could say that a crossbow is just a blend between a gun and a bow, you can enjoy the stability the gun experience will give you, but at the same time the challenge of letting loose a trajectory armed with a completely different type of ammunition, and one that has distinct limitations. The effective range of a crossbow is say, about 40 yards, this is about the same as 60 or 70lb compound bow. One of the drawbacks of using a crossbow is that they can be cumbersome to carry; also they require much care and attention when drawing and releasing the string tension. As with any firing apparatus, safety is always paramount, and sometimes if you are on stand and want your crossbow cocked, this can be difficult to the sheer size of the crossbow.  The crossbow is not an arrow gun, the physical range of the crossbow is limited, and the reload time is slow, that’s why for ease, speed and portability, a rifle is often considered preferable.

Which is more effective? Crossbow, Compound Bow or Rifle?

There is many a debate between the uses of a crossbow a compound bow and that of a rifle, which is more effective? And perhaps, which is more accurate for hunting? Some people prefer a crossbow, as it is sometime seen as more challenging, and the use of this primitive weapon has a great appeal, and that a crossbow is able to be used in some suburban areas whereas a firearm is not. But saying that, the rifle is often seen as being the best choice and sometimes there is no comparison to either a crossbow or compound bow, as a rifle is considered more accurate, faster loading, and the distance you have to get between you and your prey is much less. But the use of these hunting devices can be restrictive to the area in which you live, some laws allow you to use a crossbow in the rifle season only, but in the archery season you cannot. Another plus for the use of a rifle against a crossbow and compound bow is that the arrow and bolt are relatively quiet but not completely. They are also much slower than a bullet, so the prey that you are hunting can sometimes jump, which can make the arrow or bolt hit the animal in another place than was originally intended. Saying this though, there is nothing quite like getting near to your target when hunting with a crossbow or compound. It gives you that feeling of raw hunting in its basic form, just you and your prey, whereas with the rifle, you are much further away.

Consider a Crossbow for Your Hunting Experience

When comparing the three pieces of equipment, one must consider health and strength and especially upper body extremity. One can have problems with a compound bow, in this case, a crossbow is possibly the bow that you require, either that or a rifle.

A shaft from a high performance crossbow may achieve about 350 feet per second, whilst the arrow from a high performance compound bow will tend to fly at 335 feet per second, but these speeds can vary, depending on the composite being shot off the arrow or bolt. The compound bow with its style of pulleys, usually shoot a fairly heavy arrow, compared to the lighter and shorter bolt fired from a crossbow. The effective killing range with a crossbow is no greater than your typical compound bow, if fact one can think of it as a horizontal compound bow that is being held for you at full draw, and not even stop to consider the fact that it has a rifle like stock, quite frankly that is where the likeness ends.

Usually big game animals such as bear, elk, moose and deer are better suited to being hunted with the use of a rifle, and game such rabbit, turkey and coyotes, are better suited to a crossbow or compound bow. But in saying that, the crossbow and the compound bow will do the job when hunting larger animals, but more skill is needed. A point to consider is that big game shot with a crossbow or compound bow, will often make a better meal. This is possibly because of the adrenaline factor; the shock to the animal is more severe with a high powered rifle than that of a crossbow or compound bow.
